Ben Harris, Cornwall College Graduate Winner

Each year Krowji offers an artist studio space free of charge to selected graduate artists from the Creative Contemporary Practice BA course at Cornwall College. This week we welcomed the 2020/2021 winning graduates to their studio spaces at Krowji, Jane Howard and Max Whetter who are busy settling in to their spaces.

It is always a pleasure to see how these artists develop their practice over their year of residency, and we are delighted that many of them continue their growth by moving into their own studio here, afterwards. One such creative is Ben Harris, who was one of the selected graduates for the 2019/2020 award. Ben has now moved on from his shared space and into a self-contained artist studio in our 1907 building, so that he can continue the development of his practice. We caught up with Ben to find out why he has chosen to build on his experience here at Krowji, and what the future holds for his textile work.

What were your ambitions for your business/practice as you graduated?

My ambitions for when I graduated were to just keep doing what I was doing. To continue with my textiles and try and get my name out there more by creating a website and setting up pages on social media to help with commissions.

What did it mean for you to secure the Krowji studio space?

Securing the Krowji studio meant that I was able to work in a new space surrounded by lots of other artists and makers which I was so excited to be doing. If I hadn’t failed at Falmouth and come to Cornwall College I never would have had this amazing experience. Some things just seem to happen for a reason!

How did you spend the time during the year of residency?

During my residency I continued with my practice and got busy making lots of textiles which I was able to sell. My first Christmas Open Studios was amazing as I sold quite a few things and chatted to some great people.

As well as making during my residency I met a lot of great artists and have made some good contacts that will help me in the future, and amazing new friends.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to hopefully just keep growing my little business and to start using my new studio. It’s so exciting to be continuing on at Krowji as it’s a great place!

The artists and makers who make up our tenant list at Krowji are extremely diverse, and our community is a melting pot of practices, methods and types of work. However, the common thread among all of our tenants is the desire to be creative and productive, surrounded by like-minded people. We are delighted that Ben is continuing on as a tenant at Krowji and very much look forward to his product development.
