Open Studios Cornwall 2012

Artists and makers from Krowji again opened their doors for the Open Studios Cornwall event in June 2012. Over 30 resident artist and makers participated in this year’s event, giving people the opportunity to buy creative works direct from the artist. In 2011 this event attracted over 20,000 visitors and has now become one of Cornwall’s premier art events. On display at Krowji was glass, print, textiles, furniture and wood products, ceramics, painting, mosaics, jewellery, illustration, mixed media and installation art.

Open Studios Cornwall 2012 at Krowji was open to the public, gallery owners, collectors and trade buyers alike. Visitors were treated to an impressive display of high quality arts and crafts and the on site café served lunches and freshly baked cakes. There was also a live band playing in the café on both Saturdays. For children, artist Sarah Gatter ran a “Colour Monkeys” workshop. And for adults, installation artist Alice Mahoney ran a day printmaking and bookbinding course and a mould making and casting workshop. Open Studios is a fabulous opportunity to see, buy, and get involved with the exceptional work being produced at Krowji in Redruth.

Redruth is fast becoming another new creative centre for Cornwall, adding to the well known artistic hubs in St. Ives, Penzance and Truro. More and more artists and makers are moving to Krowji to become a part of its unique artistic community. The diverse range of arts and crafts being produced there are stocking galleries and outlets throughout Cornwall and beyond.

Krowji artists have become an important part of the local area, contributing to public work in Redruth’s town centre and nearby sites. Painter Tony Minnion worked with a local secondary school to produce the large hoarding light banner at the bottom of Station Hill and illustrator Jenny Nightingale  completed a children’s activity guide to Gwennap Pit commissioned for the World Heritage Site.
