Help Kate Publish Her Book!

The Girl Trapped in the Musical is a book written and illustrated by Kate Perry. The inspiration for this story came from her love of musical theatre and writing but also stemming from her fears for the future, of her parents moving house and her anxieties surrounding this. Her fears of returning home to find that her parents have moved away without her.

The story centres around a girl who enjoys escaping into a world of musicals, away from the real world, only to find herself trapped amongst good and bad characters from various different musicals.

The book, along with some of the props and images used to illustrate it were shown as part of APEX Arts in this years Inland Art Festival, a contemporary art festival based in Redruth, Cornwall.

By pledging on this Crowdfunder you will not only get a signed copy of the book and limited edition screen print, but you will also give Kate the opportunity to print further copies of her book.

If you pledge an extra £10 you can also get a copy of her 2016 calendar, with pictures of Kate.

Kate has a studio in Krowji, Redruth, Cornwall and spends much of her time there making drawings and screenprinting. For every item pledged on this Crowdfunder you will receive a limited edition screen print made, signed and numbered by Kate.

Foreword from The Girl Trapped in the Musical:

“Kate was born on the 23rd July 1994 I needed help for her to be delivered. She was bruised on her face with slight swelling where the forceps had encouraged her exit. She fought her way into this world.

The day I was leaving hospital, my room was filled with doctors as they gave me the news that Kate had Down Syndrome. Two days later we were rushed back into hospital when Kate had suffered an apnoea attack, also that she had serious cardiac issues and needed to have open heart surgery.

I fought to get her weight up enough so that they could operate, tube feeding her every 3 to 4 hours. Many trips to Bristol and London Hospitals and after 8 months she had her successful open heart surgery.

Speech and communication is a battle for Kate, she dislikes large groups of people and finds new things challenging. Kate has met many challenges in life so far, but with support, love, and a strong belief in her she has succeeded. She lives by our motto “If you don’t try you will never know.”

Only this year, one of the biggest challenges she set herself was to run/walk the 5K Pretty Muddy challenge to raise money for cancer research. Kate hates getting wet and muddy but completed this with determination and a little help from her friends. They came last but she succeeded.

Kates passion for art, dance, drama, theatre, acting and singing have brought about her idea of writing a play in the form of a book, read in the third person. Kate has taken her time to write and create the illustrations for her book. My grateful thanks go to Alice Mahoney for her time, patience and creativity which continually helps to inspire Kate.

I hope you enjoy Kates book and realise that there is more to Kate than meets the eye.”
