Beside The Wave visited Amy at her Krowji studio where they viewed over 20 of the artist’s works on canvas and paper in preparation for ‘Underlying Edges’. A series of photographs taken on the north and south coasts of Cornwall, which showed the patterns and pathways carved on the sand by retreating waves, provided the inspiration for Amy’s collection.
Amy – “The big dramatic skies and lapping tides have found presence in my work. Particularly inspired by the beaches Harlyn Bay, Porthtowan, Gyllyngvase, and Polurrian on the Lizard, I am always drawn to the ground underneath me, the moving water channels in the sand, the patterns that are left behind and the surface light reflections. I enjoy using oil paint in dynamic ways that mimic the way the water carves the land. Sometimes I will start a painting by simply spilling paint over part of the surface of the canvas, creating beautiful fluid edges, like the way the lapping waves spill in over the wet sand at low tide. Sometimes a piece will have more than four layers of paint before I deem it complete. The changing light continues to transform our beautiful ever-changing coastline throughout the seasons and this is something I aim to capture in my work.”
Since graduating from Falmouth University 13 years ago, Amy’s work has grown more distinctive, otherworldly and haunting. She has collaborated with Beside The Wave gallery since 2016, and the venue is delighted to be hosting Amy’s first solo show to be held in Cornwall since 2008.
Beside The Wave is open Monday – Saturday 10am ’til 5pm, and Sunday 11am ’til 4pm.
