2019 Graduate Studio Award Winners

At the start of September two new tenants were welcomed to studios at Krowji, Cornwall’s largest creative hub. These artists joining Krowji’s creative community are the successful recipients of the 2019 Graduate Studio Award, selected by a panel of staff from Cornwall College and Krowji.

The annual award gives two selected BA (Hons) Art & Design Practice graduates from Cornwall College the opportunity to test their creative practice, working rent-free for a whole year in a dedicated and professional studio space.  The Award, which is now in its fifth year, has been developed to provide a valuable and effective bridge between education and professional practice.

Mixed media artist Rose Lodge embeds sustainability at the heart of her drawing and printmaking practice, working to render discarded urban fragments and found objects in silverpoint, graphite, charcoal and carbon ink. Meanwhile, Textile artist Ben Harris is inspired by his coastal surroundings to create quilts and cushions using machine and hand stitching, applique and patchwork.

Successful graduates Rose & Ben will have the opportunity to participate in Krowji’s networking sessions and Open Studios events, the next of which takes place 30th Nov-1st Dec.

Since the end of the 2018 residency year, award recipient Carol Weir has taken on her own studio at Krowji, in order to continue developing her practice alongside part-time further study at Falmouth University. In taking on her own space after her residency, she joins former award recipients Sarah Cooling, Vanessa Penrose, Vicki Aimers, Mel Johns and Bettina Holland.

This year’s Graduate Studio Award winners:
