Drawing with silverpoint serves a twofold purpose; the quiet meditative process and delicate mark-making seeks to slow down our fast-paced lives, whilst the silver rendering of the curated fragments, once so carelessly discarded, also raises the subjects’ status.
Printmaking allows for a more experimental and playful approach. It also facilitates a quicker, more spontaneous method of working and I’m particularly excited about working in mezzotint. I also create miniature concertina books to unfurl stories.
My approach, rather than add to the chaos of tearing up this beautiful planet, is to curate the torn fragments, rendering them quietly and simply in silverpoint, graphite, charcoal or carbon ink. The silver tip supported by a twig could last for the next five years even with regular use – I can’t think of a more appropriate accolade for sustainability.
