I paint outside like there is no other way to paint.  Somehow along the way, I have become determined to communicate the very essence of a place.

Increasing the physical experience; by walking to paint, finding shelter, letting the sun, tide, wind and rain dictate where I can and can’t set up my outside studio, and how long for; seems to increase for me the presence of the work in that time frame.  That the place, where I have tuned into, localised, is somehow more vividly communicated.

I began painting outside away from people, secret spots where that feeling of wildness, of remoteness in the landscape takes hold; but even I know that these are idylls.  Our fingerprints are all over the place.  Sometimes we have to look hard to see them, others, we have to peel them off to find the underneath.

The works having been painted entirely in situ, are layered, textured and hyper vivid, and hopefully change a little as you get to know them and when viewed at different times of the day.   I work in both large and small formats, on stretched and unstretched canvas.

When it rains, knowing my paint will slide off the canvas, I retreat to my studio and draw in inks and gouache.   I produce wildlife drawings for prints and originals with a particular love of birds and fish.

I’ve exhibited in London, Scotland and Cornwall, I often work to commissions and it is always a pleasure to do so.  Under my curating hat, I have worked with a large number of wonderful artists, who I am very pleased to have got to know over the years, producing shows for my pop up gallery ‘Our Autonomous Nature’ in London and Bristol.  I also pick up the occasional garden design project, when the idea of painting with flowers is just too good to resist.
